Don’t Call yourself a Slay Queen anymore.

When adults used the word ‘Slaying‘ or ‘I slay“, it generally irks me because I consider it a teenage slang . SO seeing all these old people posting pictures talking about how they slayed the look and calling themselves slay queens or slay mama generally made me give them the side-eye, while admiring their ensemble.

In recent times, I have seen the term “slay queen” take an extreme negative connotation. Nowadays, people (mostly boys) have begun to use it as a way as stating a girl is dumb, stupid, materialistic or borrowing clothes to pose on Social media. For the longest time, it annoyed me because I have seen many stunning well dressed ladies address themselves as a slay queen. So even if I didn’t agree with the use due to the teenage feel, I was pretty sure that the women didn’t use the terms thinking it meant that they were dumb.

I took it personal because it seems as the case of the term ‘Feminism’. Nigerian men in particular, seem to attribute feminism with  women who display hyper aggressiveness, not wanting to cook for their husband and generally think they are better than men. So I presumed that this was a similar situation ……taking a positive term and turning it into something negative. I got into quite a bit of online skirmishes until I decided one fine day to google the term.

Urban Dictionary defines a slay queen as

1.’Young and naive girls who apparently do not date broke men. They spend hours on Snapchat and Instagram showing off things they don’t even own.’ (2017)

2. Girls who do not have a wealthy background but appear as if they do. They use malicious acts to attain cash, drink expensive alcohol, procure expensive cellphones. But back at home she’s a chicken chaser. (2017)

3. A beautiful but dumb young woman who chases after wealthy men. (2017)

4. A slay queen is someone who can slay any given person by simplystating their opinion (2014)

5. Anyone that gives people a hard time breathing because of how beautiful they look (2016)

Honestly,  I was not expecting that. A lot of people I follow on Instagram,  buy expensive clothes (with their own earnings), showcase them and hashtag #slayqueen. I really don’t think they know. Notice how all the older definitions connotes something more positive but in 2017, it has completely done a 360 and is now something that no one wants to be called or call themselves. So if you are reading this…..Now you know. Don’t call yourself a slay queen.
